This well-loved parable emphasizes the role of gratitude in overcoming discouragement.


William R. Rathvon, C.S.B., served in Mrs. Eddy's household at Chestnut Hill from late in 1908 until her passing in 1910. He went on to serve as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, Treasurer of The Mother Church, and a member of the Christian Science Board of Directors. He wrote this short allegory in 1911.
