William R. Rathvon, C.S.B., served in Mrs. Eddy's household at Chestnut Hill from late in 1908 until her passing in 1910. He went on to serve as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, Treasurer of The Mother Church, and a member of the Christian Science Board of Directors. He wrote this short allegory in 1911. This well-loved parable emphasizes the role of gratitude in overcoming discouragement.
